Initiation into Lovecraftian Horror

Madness

Lovecraftian horror lies beyond  our reality. Lovely, it is not for the faint of heart. H.P. Lovecraft knew this all too well. His stories of cosmic horror are not your run-of-the-mill scarefests. They’re wild and erratic, drug-fueled escapades that will take you on a trip like no other. With savage wit, Lovecraftian horror takes you on a stream-of-consciousness journey through the darkest corners of the psyche.

His psychedelic prose is like a mind-bending trip that will leave you questioning your own sanity. His acid-laced descriptions of the cosmic beings that lurk beyond our understanding will haunt you for days. The surreal imagery he conjures up will make your head spin. And the whirlwind pace of his storytelling will leave you breathless, with unpredictable twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the bitter end.

Lovecraft’s narrative is disjointed, chaotic, and frenzied, but it’s all part of the experience. His bold and brash style is unapologetically honest, with an irreverent tone that pulls no punches. He’s not afraid to delve deep into his own personal reflections, or to offer up scathing social commentary and cultural criticism. Lovecraft’s iconoclastic worldview is a radical individualism that speaks to the heart of the human condition.

And then there’s the madness. Oh how you’ll find the maddness.  Lovecraftian horror is not for the faint of heart, and the madness it conjures up is a thing of beauty. It’s a frenzied and frenetic descent into the unknown, with an unapologetic honesty that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew. Lovecraftian horror is not just a genre, it’s a way of life. So buckle up, and get ready to take a trip you’ll never forget.

Origins

There is no origin to the Cosmic Horror you fiend! It is and always was!

As I gaze into the abyss that is the Cosmic Horror genre, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease. It’s not your typical horror, the kind that makes you jump in your seat or scream in terror. That’s not it at all, No, it’s something deeper, something far more insidious. It’s a way of processing the darkness that lies within the human psyche. It’s about exploring the unknown and the incomprehensible, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of the universe.

It draws from a Psychoactive esoterica. Also it dabbles in the sciences of cosmology and phenomenology in a way that gives your goose pimples goose pimples.  It’s the ancient myths and legends of our ancestors, the Cosmic Horror genre defies convention and experimentation. It’s not the work of a single person, but a product of the collective human experience, a way of grappling with the mysteries of the cosmos that will haunt your thoughts and dreams.

Cosmic Horror is a wild and trippy framework that challenges us to confront our existential dread head-on. It pushes us to question our very existence and our place in the grand scheme of things. With Cosmic Horror, we can venture into the unknown, explore the unfathomable, and discover meaning and purpose in a world that can be downright crazy and senseless at times.

By tapping into the deepest recesses of the human psyche and facing our darkest fears and anxieties, Cosmic Horror offers us a chance to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. It’s a mind-bending trip that will expand your consciousness and leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about reality.

BEYOND THE VEIL OF MADDNESS

Cosmic Horror and the Supernatural

"When thou dost gaze upon the Cosmic Horror, thy mind shall falter and fail, for it is beyond mortal ken. Thou shalt not comprehend what thou dost witness, nor shall thy feeble tongue be able to articulate the dread enormity of that which confronts thee. Verily, the very foundations of thy sanity shall be shaken to their core, and thou shalt be left adrift in a sea of unnameable horrors and unspeakable truths."

Great Ancient Ones

The Great Old Ones, a twisted and malevolent bunch of creatures with enough power to make the earth quake and the seas churn. These ageless old ones once reigned supreme over this planet we call MOTHER. They weren’t just some run-of-the-mill gods, mind you, but beings of such monstrous and abominable might that even the bravest of souls dare not utter their names. These twisted and corrupted creatures, with their dark and twisted powers, still lurk in the shadows and the corners of the earth, biding their time until they can rise once more and wreak their savage fury upon the world.

Humans are Worms

As you delve into the realm of Lovecraftian horror you’ll find the emphasis is placed upon the grandiose scope and unconcern of the cosmos. You’ll see as well the inconsequential nature of humanity within its infinite expanses. These ancient tales feature encounters with numinous powers that defy our understanding of existence and our position in the universe. It is beckoning us to peer beyond the veil of material reality and behold the abyssal depths of the unknown.

"That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die."

"There are horrors beyond life's edge that we do not suspect, and once in a while man's evil prying calls them just within our range."
Herbert West

Begin Lovecraftian horror

In the shadowed depths of the abyss, where the boundaries of reality and the unknown collide, a tale unfolds. Its sentences, intricately woven with complex structures, laden with archaic verbiage and scientific jargon, give shape to a world where the lines between the physical and the metaphysical are blurred.

The use of first-person narration draws the reader in, making them a part of the story. The preference for ambiguous or open-ended conclusions leaves the reader questioning, searching for answers that may never come. Heavy use of adjectives and adverbs creates a palpable atmosphere of tension and dread. The interplay between science and the supernatural is explored, but it is not without its dangers, for the line between the two is often blurred. The aversion to overt violence and gore is a hallmark of the genre, as is the preference for implication and suggestion over explicit description. The formal and academic-sounding dialogue adds to the sense of realism, while recurring themes and motifs like ancient tomes, madness, and hidden knowledge serve to deepen the sense of unease. Attention to detail and realism is key, even in fantastical or supernatural settings, as it serves to anchor the story in a sense of plausibility. The deliberate slow pace builds tension over time, leading to a sense of the sublime and the numinous, an awe-inspiring terror in the face of the unknown.

Explaining The Unexplainable

The air is thick with an unnameable dread, a terror that grips the soul and holds it in its grasp, as the story weaves its way through descriptions of the settings and atmosphere. The characters, often mere mortals thrust into the cosmic horror of otherworldly beings, are depicted with rich symbolism and allusions to myth and literature.

The focus of the narrative is on the unknown and the unknowable, on the limits of human understanding and the psychological impact of horror. The narrators, often unreliable or plagued by a tenuous grasp on reality, add to the unsettling nature of the tale.

Cultic & Esotericism

The fascination with ancient and mysterious civilizations is apparent in the motifs and themes that recur throughout the story, while fatalism and nihilism hang heavy in the air like a miasma. The history and geography of New England are woven into the fabric of the tale, grounding it in a sense of realism that only serves to heighten the supernatural elements.

Chant with me bretheren. As they say:

“Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn.”

This is the infamous chant associated with the Great Old One Cthulu. Cthulu Beckons Thee. However, whenever I try to adequately explain the Cthulhu Mythos I come up with a blank. Why is that? To me this embodies the nature of “the Lovecraftian Horror.”

Great Ancient Ones

O great ancient ones. The Powerful entities of old. Aka “Great Old Ones.” They are far beyond the capacity of human comprehension. These entites have existed long before Humanity, long before the cosmos, long before the Omniverse. They are so great in fact that they can influence the world in ways that human cannot comprehend. See “The Q Continuum.”
